The California Highway Patrol Sunday reported a total of 1,481 arrests since the Dec. 17 start of the AVOID regional campaign against drunken driving.
Thirty-nine injury collisions and at least four deaths on Bay Area roadways have been attributed to drinking and driving, according to CHP reports.
Recent incidents included the deaths Tuesday of Santa Rosa residents Joseph Bradbury and Kyle Blood, both 25. The pair was killed when their Acura Integra overturned into a creek near U.S. Highway 101 in Novato. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
San Leandro resident Avenbuan Igie, 26, died Dec. 18 on state Highway 13 in Oakland after being struck by a motorist who was later arrested on suspicion of being intoxicated.
On Friday, at least one person died in a Richmond accident, though it remains unknown if the fatal head-on collision was alcohol-related, according to the CHP.
Sunday, officers in Santa Clara County and in San Francisco planned to conduct DUI checkpoints. The CHP also will continue putting all available personnel on patrol during the campaign, which combines the efforts of 125 Bay Area law enforcement agencies and runs through Jan. 2.<
