When we bought our house in San Carlos many years ago, we chose it partly because one of us (me) could use walking and public transit for our commute, since we were going in opposite directions. Now, more and more people, especially younger generations, as well as those of us aging, want a more walkable and connected life.
As new developments have taken shape on the Peninsula, there have been several examples of thoughtful, higher-density growth. San Carlos has increased housing densities to levels similar to those proposed by Measure T in San Mateo, even allowing for maximum building heights beyond the limits that Measure Y currently holds in place for San Mateo. If we can do it, so can San Mateo.
For example, the project at 1232-1244 Cherry St., in our downtown mixed-use zoning district, will have high-density residential housing alongside active, ground-level storefronts. It will not only help meet our affordable housing needs but will also enhance downtown by supporting local businesses and encouraging transit options. San Mateo has the same opportunity to take on a forward-thinking approach that respects both community character and the need for progress. I look forward to the voters approving Measure T.
Sorry, Ms. Baird, but San Mateo is not San Carlos. Not only that, Measure T is a flawed bait and switch measure. If folks have voter remorse, they can change their vote in the future as I expect there will be future Measure T “clones” in the near and far future. Meanwhile, I’d recommend folks start voting out the folks who decided to put Measure T on the ballot. Measure T repeals Measure Y so whatever “protections” were given under Measure Y is now taken away. Measure T may create places to live at exactly where they want, and not the most convenient. Vote NO on Measure T.
