On behalf of flood victims across San Mateo, I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported the Community Flood and Stormwater Protection Initiative. Your actions mean our city has a fighting chance to prevent future disasters. I want to call special attention to every volunteer in the Flood Free San Mateo coalition, our City Council and the hardworking staff in Public Works who formed a true partnership to make change possible. Thank you!
While this success is wonderful, our city still faces urgent public safety concerns. In particular, I want to highlight the efforts of the Vision Zero group, that is working to prevent tragic traffic accidents around our city schools. While you may or may not agree with every pedestrian safety concept out there, I think we can all agree kids should feel safe walking or bicycling to school. I look forward to learning more about their efforts at the next City Council meeting on Jan. 16, and I encourage others to attend and learn more.Â
From stormwater infrastructure to pedestrian safety, to fixing roads, to questioning the proliferation of 5G cell towers, it’s clear that citizens want our community to take a wide variety of public safety issues more seriously. Our victory on the Community Flood and Stormwater Protection Initiative shows what is possible when we get smart, and work together.Â
Thank you for your letter. I will listen in on the 16th. Several kids have been hit by vehicles in recent months, it is a real worry, especially as a grandma of two young elementary school boys.
Congratulations on getting other homeowners to bail out homeowners who didn’t buy flood insurance. And bailing out the city for wasting their previous monies on items unrelated to flood infrastructure. But don’t worry, as Janet Periat alluded to in her LTE, the costs will be passed on and the cost of living will increase, making our area less affordable. Or maybe that’s the goal…
