Many residents of the original transit village in San Carlos have had their foundations and personal property subjected to flood damage occurring three to 10 times a year depending on the duration and volume of the seasonal rainstorms. According to San Carlos city engineer Parvis Mokhtari this is due to the lack of sufficient drainage under Highway 101.
Concrete foundation footing settlement is very common in flood zones, causing cracks, sloping foundations, and uneven floors particularly to homes built on unstable Bay mud like those in this neighborhood.
There’s been no flooding at all since the new Marriott Residence Inn located in the center of the flood zone was just being considered a few years ago.
Apparently, projected funds from room taxes paid to the city was enough motivation to have the canals cleaned and the pumps turned on when yearly losses to local businesses and residents weren’t enough.
Why would the city of San Carlos intentionally cause property damage when the flood water was caused by their inability to maintain their own infrastructure and see that proper drainage was installed by Caltrans?
