I’ve been thinking about the state of our country on Independence Day. The original European settlers were people who were frustrated with religious oppression or other challenges in their own countries, so they decided to come to this one and proceeded to kill the native inhabitants and take their land.
Today, immigrants leave their own countries because of unimaginable violence and poverty, partly caused by our own meddling in both the name of anti-communism and the war on drugs. They come to this country to labor in our fields and homes, doing the jobs that Americans wouldn’t do for twice the pay.
How do we justify our choice of which group of immigrants to celebrate and which to condemn?
That is an easy question Allison. We welcome those who immigrate to our country legally with our permission. We do not welcome those who sneak into our country illegally without our permission. I hope that clears up any confusion you have on the subject.
The U.S. civilian workforce includes 8 million unauthorized immigrants, accounting for 5% of those who were working or were unemployed and looking for work, according to separate Pew Research Center estimates.
