Editor,
Pete Harames Passing/Memory Article June 23: Pete brought an intensity to his players that was contagious and continued year after year.
In the last few years, I would see Pete at Peet’s Coffee in Millbrae. Pete, with a smile on his face, would tell me the same story: I’ll never forget that game at Sequoia (former Giant Paul McClellan on the team) down 9 to 1, wind blowing out and I asked who wants to pitch. You pitched a complete game two days ago and you raised your hand and we went on to win 14-11 and a trip to CCS.
It certainly helped that it was a total team effort with Steve Angeloni hitting three home runs.
Not expecting to pitch, I had visited a college that day, had a hub cap stolen off a vehicle and slept in a van on the way to the game. Pete could just look at you and give you the energy to compete.
Pete’s passion and love for the game was installed in players year after year. Coaches like Rich Jefferies and Pete Harames coached from their heart to make players better and stronger people. A great era where coaching had nothing to do with money.
Thank you Pete. Your spirit will continue to be trickled down from generation to generation.
