As a 17-year-old living in San Mateo County, I notice that while there are many activities for younger kids and adults, there are far fewer spaces designed for teens. Outside of school and sports, it can be hard to find safe, affordable and welcoming places to spend time, especially in the evenings or on weekends.
A lot of us turn to hanging out at the mall or just being online, but that doesn’t build community or give us healthy outlets. Investing in teen centers, music and art programs, or late-hour recreation options would not only give us something positive to do, but also help reduce issues like loitering and stress that many high school students face.
I know budgets are tight, but even small steps, such as expanding library hours or opening community gyms for teens, could make a significant difference. It would also show that our county values young people and wants us to grow into engaged, responsible adults.
I hope city leaders and local organizations will consider making more spaces available for teens to connect, learn and relax.
