To columnist Matt Grocott, the San Mateo Daily Journal polls are not randomized samples of the population and often indicate nothing other than the level of partisan heat on the part of specific vocal minorities for any particular issue. On this issue, regarding Jackie Speier, it will be the election results that matter.
Look, for example, at the Sept. 26 letters to the editor section. The Trump contingent is, as usual, emulating the techniques of their leader and trying to dominate the media. Most readers just ignore them.
Finally, sports analogies have minimal applicability here. If Jackie Speier can use her Washington expertise now in addition to her local experience to help the county, more power to her. Most of this last gasp opposition to her candidacy arises from the widely-held belief that she will win.
Mr. Kristofferson, speaking of ignoring… How about all those folks giving us lessons on Mother Nature and ignoring the fact that everyone, climate change believers, or not, continue to burn fossil fuels to their hearts’ desires? Witness the COP climate conference folks taking over 400 private planes to attend, being bathed in air-conditioned comfort, and dining on steaks from methane-producing cows (while preaching, ironically, about carbon emissions). Or Al Gore taking jets all over the place to talk, ironically, about greenhouse gases. Or locally, all the letter writers who preach about saving the world but are doing nothing to share their experiences of living a carbon-free life and whether their actions make a difference. It seems to me that most readers ignore folks lecturing us about climate change because their actions are hypocritical to their message.
Mr. Kristofferson, I am certain it is not lost on you that the paper I write for is the San Mateo Daily Journal, making it wholly appropriate to reference a poll they had been running on the question of Jackie Speier's decision to run for county supervisor. Additionally, you will note what I write is opinion. Therefore, to launch my piece off the opinion of SMDJ readers is also wholly appropriate. However, to be fair. I cited as well the op/ed written by Mr. Mark SImon, a piece which was predominantly positive toward Ms. Speier. Finally, I fear you missed a major point I was making, which is that politicians often remain in office far too long and, thereby, do not make room for younger but well qualified candidates to enter into office.
