Editor,

Editor,
Let me state my position on the proposed San Mateo historic resources program and correct Mr. Frank Elliott’s misinterpretation of our recent conversation.
I recused myself on City Council votes on a Baywood historic district because I live in Baywood. I will continue to recuse myself during the new City Council.
I support the development of a San Mateo historic resources program because it will be citywide, not just in one neighborhood. We have important history all over San Mateo. Why shouldn’t all San Mateans have input? A historic resources program should be driven by the facts and the preferences of San Mateo’s residents.
I told Mr. Elliott and Mr. Andrew Ryan I will remain neutral while program details develop. They repeatedly said, “So, this means you don’t agree to ‘No Consent, No Historic.’” Each time, I responded, “No, I didn’t say that. I want to gather the facts and leave it to the community to decide.” In his Nov. 25 letter to the editor, Mr. Elliott turned that into “she declined to support it.” That was neither what I said, nor my intent.
Mr. Elliott also suggested the city should develop its historic resources ordinance, i.e. the working details, first before the eligibility criteria. I have referred this to city staff for feedback.
If there is a way we can move forward together, not divided, to respect community beliefs while identifying and celebrating San Mateo’s historic resources, count me in.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
