As the chief probation officer in San Mateo County, I am very concerned about the fact that San Mateo County law enforcement agencies are losing nearly $13 million per year in Proposition 172 public safety funds, as a result of the diversion of jet fuel sales taxes to Oakland and San Francisco County. Politics should not drive the distribution of these funds. SFO is in San Mateo County, which has the tax authority for the Airport, and therefore, San Mateo should receive 100 percent of the airport's jet-fuel sales taxes.
Given the increasing gang violence in our county, on almost a daily basis, San Mateo County needs every penny of the Proposition 172 funds to proactively address this violence and make our communities as safe as possible.
I strongly support Supervisor Adrienne Tissier's position regarding the disposition of the San Francisco Airport jet fuel tax funds. Supervisor Tissier supports closing the loophole which has inappropriately allowed Oakland to claim fuel tax revenue from across California. She supports closing this loophole in 2006, not 2008, and she strongly supports our county rightfully receiving 100 percent of its tax revenue.
As a member of the San Mateo County law enforcement community, I urge the Legislature to amend AB451, and return 100 percent of our desperately needed tax and public safety funds so we can maximize the safety of our cities, county, and our people.
