I lived through World War II in the relative safety of England and feel great compassion for all people who suffered in that and other wars. The San Mateo Medical Board certainly has other priorities than international events, but some events are so horrendous that they need to be addressed in any public forum available. Calling for a cease-fire is not antisemitic. It is a righteous and humane act.
When a society stands by and sees what amounts to genocide, yet stays silent, that allows the human suffering to continue: as occurred when the world allowed Hitler to come to power. The United States turned back ships carrying Jews fleeing from the Holocaust, condemning them to death; and the pope and German Catholic Church failed the Jews by inaction.
Countries have a right to defend themselves: Hamas attacks deserved retribution, but that does not warrant the slaughter of over 30,000 people, most of whom were women and children; besieging the entirety of Gaza; cutting off all water and electricity; the destruction: condemning the civilian population to starvation. This is what Hitler did. That is the Warsaw Ghetto scenario.
Several Jews at the meeting expressed concern for the destruction. The impact of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza is likely to cause retribution against innocent Jews throughout the world.
I take particular exception to the personal attacks against Ms. Corzo and Ms. Green’s ridiculous accusations of blasphemy, especially since she is calling for “cohesion and tolerance-building.”
OK, Ms. Davis. In the relative safety of England while your countrymen were bombing Germany and caused tens of thousands of civilian deaths night after night? Where were you then? Corzo is sitting even safer in her fancy office while telling Israel what to. Are you kidding me?
Janet Davis and anyone who believes that Hamas is telling the truth regarding civilians deaths is a fool. "silence is foolish if we are wise, but wise if we are foolish. "
Ms. Davis, where was the righteousness and humanity when Hamas terrorists massacred over 1000 people and took hundreds of hostages? Where is the call for unconditional surrender by Hamas and the return of all hostages? You say countries have a right to defend themselves and Hamas attacks deserve retribution. Well, I’d say you’re seeing the retribution unfold in front of your eyes. As long as there’s resistance by Hamas, all death and destruction from the initial massacre are on Hamas and nobody else.
The best way to stop a war is not to start one. In addition, I would like to know your source for the remark about the church doing nothing. Ever hear of the White Rose, not to mention the church standing up to the Nazi on getting rid of the handicapped. Read 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich."
WillAllen - I am not sure who you are responding to. I read that book very carefully and you are correct, there were several anti-Nazi movements in Germany. All were silenced and members killed. My point is that Germany was relentlessly bombed at night by the British as the Nazis refused to surrender. That was similar to our bombing in Japan until their Emperor finally overruled his military after Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed into oblivion. Hitler and his henchmen never surrendered so the Germans continued to suffer. There is an awful similarity here with Gaza under the leadership of Hamas. I am afraid that Israel will pursue just like the Allies did in WWII. Unconditional surrender. Israel has no choice.
