Being the Biotech Capital of the World would surely demand that the senior population in our city is one of the foremost recognized groups of residents who have lived here the longest and have paid the most taxes to fund the programs and developments this City Council has approved.
The Teglia Center is inadequate for the 15,028 seniors that live in South City, a surplus city property with its 36 parking spaces, dividing us by floors and rooms. This is not a community center.
What has gotten lost in this narrative is that the Community Civic Campus serves the library, Park and Recreation and council chambers; that is, if you can find a parking space.
Reopening the Municipal Services Building will only complement the “Campus” with all its possibilities as an intergenerational/senior/multi-use community center.

Our City Council each year proclaims May as National Seniors Month and they quote the San Mateo County statistics:
Around 10,000 people daily will become seniors by 2030, and 22% of the world’s population will be seniors by 2050.
Furthermore, as the necessity to preserve and reopen the Municipal Services Building becomes more apparent, which has passed every code inspection since 1969 and over the years has been maintained by hiring a contractor who performed the work, it is structurally sound after all the work was completed. It had these upgrades: air conditioning, electrical system, roofing, interior paint, foundation areas of the structure needing to be code compliant with today’s codes. It has and can provide vast opportunities as an intergenerational/senior/multi-use community center for every age group in our city with programs that the $210 million Community Civic Campus cannot provide without eliminating services.
