Regarding the story “Biotech planned for 84 acres,” I strongly oppose any development at the Redwood LIFE site at all, due to the irreversible environmental damage this development would cause. While the alternative plan to the Redwood LIFE projects slightly reduces its scale, it does nothing to change the fact that development threatens the delicate ecosystem of Belmont Slough and its surrounding environment.
Belmont Slough is a vital habitat for wildlife, including migratory birds, fish and other species that rely on its natural balance, two of which are federally endangered. Increased construction, traffic and artificial lighting will disrupt these ecosystems, driving away wildlife and degrading water quality. The long-term impact of soil disturbance on this former landfill site also raises concerns about contamination and pollution. Even with mitigation efforts, we cannot guarantee the safety of the surrounding land and waterways.
Furthermore, this project will contribute to carbon emissions. A 25-year construction timeline means decades of air pollution, increased vehicle congestion, and strain on local resources. This is a factor residents should not ignore. This development would negatively affect the Bay’s ecosystem as a whole, and should absolutely be stopped.
I strongly urge the Redwood City Council and the Planning Commission to listen to the community and vocally reject this project outright.
