Since the pandemic, the Daily Journal has published several columns addressing mental health, including efforts by the county to expand services. While these initiatives are important, we should also consider a more fundamental question: how can we improve mental well-being before intervention becomes necessary?
One answer may lie in restoring opportunities for recreation and community engagement. In a recent column, Greg Wilson highlighted several privately operated recreational facilities (roller rink, bowling, ice rink, miniature golf) that once served Redwood City. These have all disappeared, along with similar venues in neighboring communities. In the 15 years I have lived in the county, I have watched these spaces vanish — enough to count on most of my fingers. When my children were younger, we were fortunate to enjoy these places. What do families do together now?
Recreational spaces are not luxuries; they are essential to healthy communities. They provide safe, social and active outlets for young people and families alike — benefits that directly support mental health.
I am encouraged by San Carlos’ plan to build a new swimming pool and hope it signals a broader commitment. I urge other cities, along with the county, to prioritize rebuilding accessible recreational opportunities for all residents.
