The recent racist attack on Carolyn Hoskins at the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center is a painful reminder of the deep-rooted prejudice that persists in our society. As president of the San Mateo NAACP, I stand firmly with Carolyn and her mission to educate and uplift our community.
The vile language directed at her, calling her the N-word and other derogatory terms, reflects a toxic culture of hate that we must confront. The Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center is not just an institution; it is a vital space for understanding and celebrating African American contributions to our shared history. It serves as a beacon of hope, resilience and education for all.
Equally troubling is the lack of urgency from local law enforcement in addressing this incident, that included trespassing and threatening harm to a community elder. When acts of racism occur, swift action is essential. The police response has been inadequate, sending a dangerous message that racial abuse can go unchecked.
We must unite against racism in all its forms. Support the museum and stand against hate. Attend events, participate in discussions, and amplify voices advocating for justice and equality where our community members are respected and valued.

This incident should not define us but rather serve as a catalyst for change. Demand better from ourselves and from those in power throughout our county. The fight against racism is ongoing, and it requires each of us to be vigilant, engaged and unwavering in our commitment to justice and equity.Â
Together, we can create a future where respect, dignity and justice prevail for all. Let’s seize this opportunity. Let’s act now.
