Editor,

Although government will need to be involved in resolving the affordable housing problem in our nation, and in our community of South San Francisco, Measure AA is not the answer. Measure AA will create a large financial burden upon our city.

An important bit of context: Measure AA does NOT compel the City of SSF to build any public housing, it merely allows it if a funding source is identified. If it were a requirement, the letter writer's concerns might be warranted. In addition, the City could hire a property manager -- it does not need to be the landlord. But, if passed, AA gives the City flexibility to help our community's most vulnerable. I'm voting yes.

AA is a very bad idea with three main problems to consider. One, property tax revenue from a “city owned” project will be lost, which will result in a significant loss of income to the school district. As a SSFUSD Board Member, this should be a primary consideration, or do you not care? Two, the city can always sell the project to a third party, Magnolia Plaza for example. After this project was sold, it started to generate $342,223 in property tax revenue. However, the City of SSF no longer has control and the owner can charge whatever they want for rent. This, of course, defeats the whole "affordable housing" idea. Three, the City of SSF will expect taxpayers to fund the project, watch and see, and no thank you!
