Come on Diane, he has a cushy job. He is not about to fight as he knows his constituents will just keep on electing him. A run of the mill Democrat politician. All words and zero action.

San Mateo Democrats are not in Washington DC to write and enact good bills or good policies. Just

look at the state of these basic governmental functions in San Mateo County: homelessness, health, air pollution, GHG emissions, renewable energy, public transportation, bike lanes, income disparities, .... it's all fluff no substance with local politicians.

In all her years in DC, Jackie Speier was the primary sponsor of only 5 bills that were enacted:

H.R. 610 (117th): San Francisco Bay Restoration Act

H.R. 1773 (116th): Rosie the Riveter Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2019

H.R. 6125 (116th): Supporting Survivors of Military Sexual Trauma Act of 2020

H.R. 2191 (114th): Breast Cancer Research Stamp Reauthorization Act of 2015

H.R. 6982 (110th): To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 210 South Ellsworth Avenue in San Mateo, California, as the “Leo J. Ryan Post Office …

These aren't exactly earth-shattering achievements.

San Mateo Democrats are tolerated in Washington DC for the fundraising they bring in and how little attention their voters are paying. The same is true for Sacramento politics as well. San Mateo Democrats usually don't stick out. San Mateo Democrats aren't exactly known for pushing things trough and getting good stuff done - case in point Major Rob Newsom, Diane Papan, Nicole Fernandez discriminating against an Equity Focus Area like North Central. Only local politicians Rick Bonilla and Noelia Corzo spoke out for North Central. No word from Jackie Speier or Josh Becker.

Thanks for your letter, Ms. Birmingham, but you don’t seem to realize that you’ve highlighted the many reasons why Mullin has said Democrats don’t hold the gavel. To wit, Mullin is being silent because he can’t provide any alternatives for a better direction. Mullin has nothing to say worth listening to. Again, because he can’t provide any alternatives for a better direction. If Mullin were to take his job seriously and put America first, Mullin would have voted for the Laken Riley Act instead of being on the wrong side of history during every round of voting. Do you have any proposed alternatives? Because if you don’t your better option is to not reelect Mullin and instead vote for an America First candidate like we did with an America First president, President Trump.

MichKosk

While I disagree with wanting Mullin to "fight Trump" I do think it is pretty funny that you Dems elected this nepo-baby who has never, to my knowledge, had an original thought and now expect a scrappy inspirational "fighter". Did you follow Kevin's political trajectory as an assemblyman, who was apparently only elected because people liked his dad? Did you notice that his social media contains only copy-paste statements of Democrat talking points? While I could not bring myself to vote for either one, at least David Canepa is smart and fiery... would have probably been a better choice for you so-called Progressives. Oh well, the Democrat machine will ensure we have Mullin for the next 30 years or so and he knows it.

I'd much prefer to see the vision and fight of a Barbara Lee. AOC, or Ro Khanna, coming from Rep. Mullin. Hopefully he'll wake up to the moment and not remain seated. People out in the streets and demanding energetic town halls, are what we want to see. Reconnecting with the labor unions and some of their more visionary leaders such as Sean Fain and others, are key to reclaiming a working class majority, not playing to the wealthy and self satisfied. One good thing to come out of the Trump Chaos is that he's ticked off just about every constituency. That's good news for the upcoming movers and shakers.

Dirk van Ulden

Mike - the constituency that you are referring to "he's ticked off just about every constituency" is known by many as the "swamp." Most Americans who have to work for a living support what Trump is doing.

America has sadly developed an addiction to MAGA, and the only way that it will purge itself is if things start failing dramatically. Except for an occasional comment on the most outrageous items, I am not going to waste my time arguing with the SMDJ Conservative Cabal (“the usual suspects” from which have already monopolized the response to this letter despite their frequent protestations of the LTE section being overwhelmed by “lefties” 🤣🤣🤣). It is clearly obvious that minds are already made up.

We will have to wait for events to play out to demonstrate clearly who forecast events correctly. Maybe we will get lucky - Trump may actually turn out to be “a stable genius” who keeps his opponents constantly off-balance while the “master negotiator” improves the economy dramatically, makes the world a better place, and wins a Nobel Peace Prize!!

On the other hand, we also might wake up to the United States, Ukraine, and Europe being betrayed from within to authoritarian governments, having wasted precious lives and immense treasure for nothing during the many decades during from WWII to the present.

Will we turn into a government of the billionaires, by the billionaires, and for the billionaires?

Or will we just muddle through the next four years while the usual cast of amateurs post classified war plans to group chats, enrich themselves with cryptocurrencies, cure diseases by injecting bleach, and sell cars on the White House lawn?

MAGA has encouraged people to distrust the experts who have sold them out. “Dems” are too much in the habit of “letting experts do their thinking for them” instead of “doing their own research” (in the swamps of the internet…).

I take some hope from the old quote from Winston Churchill that you can “trust Americans will do the right thing - after they have tried everything else,” but I also fear the supposedly old Chinese curse “may you live in interesting times.”

DavidKristofferson

P.S. - Sorry, but I didn’t quite finish editing out an extra “during” from “decades during from WWII” in the entry above. Too late to edit it now unfortunately.

Personally, as impractical as this might be to implement, I would like to see a new political party replace the Democrats; maybe call it the “American Party,” but it should appeal to the center of the country and eschew the extremes of both sides.

Dirk van Ulden

David - don't fall for the billionaires "controlling our government." Perhaps unknown to you, there are far more billionaires on the Democrat side than on our side. When the the Tech billionaires were supporting the Left, your side never complained. Most of the billionaires in Trump's cabinet are doing the job essentially for free as they would make a lot more dough if they were running their own businesses. That includes Trump as well. Billionaires know how to solve problems and get results. Even the new mayor of SF is conceding that the so-called experts have run the City into the ground and he has convened business leaders to help him out. Churchill also said that if you still vote for liberals after you are 25, you don't have a brain.

Dirk - I already replied to this MAGA “working for free” talking point previously when Terrence brought it up:

“Trump and Musk are working for free” ???????

“Terrence” (if that is what your name really is), Trump floats a cryptocurrency days before being inaugurated and increases his personal wealth dramatically ( https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2025/01/20/on-trumps-inauguration-day-his-tokens-fill-the-swamp/ ). Musk is pushing his Starlink system onto the FAA, trying to overturn an approved Verizon contract even though Starlink has not passed the safety and cybersecurity tests that Verizon’s system has. ( https://www.pcmag.com/news/musk-faces-complaint-over-efforts-to-get-faa-to-drop-verizon-use-starlink AND https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2025/03/faa-trump-elon-plane-crash/681975/ ). “

Terence Y

Dirk - I already previously replied to DavidK’s MAGA “working for free” talking point, but it sounds like DavidK’s recycling his talking point so I may as well recycle my response:

“Technically, I believe Trump is continuing his policy of donating his salary to charitable causes so essentially, he’s working for free. I don’t believe Musk is receiving any salary so unless you have verifiable facts to the contrary, he’s working for free. As for your logic regarding cryptocurrency or Starlink being payment, that’s a false assertion. They are investments and business opportunities and if they’re profitable, they’re not a salary. Thanks for trying.”

DavidKristofferson

Thanks for recycling, Terrence! I’m glad that you are finally supporting an environmental cause!!

You can split hairs between “investments” and “salary” but the bottom line is that Trump and Musk are both benefiting financially. I’m not an expert on federal conflict of interest law, but, at the very least, this all sure **looks bad**. To portray it as charity is “charitable” to use the term ironically. But, of course., the “Biden crime family” undoubtedly did worse in your opinion.

Bottom line - there’s a lot of partisan BS flying around here, and, if it proves anything, it may be simply that both political sides leave a lot to be desired.

Terence Y

You’re welcome, DavidKristofferrson. I’ve always supported environmental causes. But real ones and not made up ones like so-called global warming. If we take your approach for “splitting hairs,” then the bottom line is stockholders from both the left and the right and everywhere in between benefit financially. So that means everyone looks bad if their ventures are successful, eh DavidK?

Bottom line – you are correct in that there is a lot of partisan BS flying around but one side is for Making America Great Again and the other wants to continue Biden’s America Last policies. What’s wrong with Making America Great Again? For those folks that don’t want to, their priorities leave a lot to be desired.

Terence Y

So DavidKristofferson, are you now trying to move towards the middle by first straddling the fence? Before I conclude you’re making an honest effort, I do want to ask why anyone is against MAGA. Everyone should be for Making America Great Again, which is what our (yes, our) great President Trump has done once before and is well on his way to doing again.

That being said, I like your assertion on MAGA distrusting the experts and Dems letting experts do their thinking for them. I’d like to clarify that many of your “experts” are those who claim they’re experts, but aren’t really, as we can find true experts to easily debunk their assertions. Anyone who does the research will find that just about all Dem narratives are based on fake news and lies. BTW, do Dems have the ability to do their own research? The “usual suspects” from the SMDJ Leftist Cabal (the “usual suspects” from which have already monopolized LTEs despite their frequent protestations of the LTE section being overwhelmed by “righties”) don’t appear to, as we see continual copied/pasted narratives from the Dem playbook.

DavidKristofferson

I never left the middle, Terrence. That might be hard to recognize from the far, far right.
