My husband and I, both born and raised in South San Francisco, were truly upset with your column regarding the South San Francisco industrial city sign! ("Take down South City sign" by Bill Silverfarb in the July 29 edition of the Daily Journal) Don't you have anything better to do than to bad mouth a city that was a melting pot - bringing many nationalities together during a difficult time.
Mr. Silverfarb's ancestors would have come to love South San Francisco. The war and depression brought many hardships to the early South San Francisco population - yet they all stuck together and helped each other "thrive" in its inception, the sign may have stressed the industry that actually made South City thrive - and it is still thriving today.
But in reality, that sign means so much more than Mr. Silverfarb could ever imagine. You don‘t notice the leaders in SSF requesting the removal of that sign - and one must remember, "things" are there before "people" move in - do you allow a sign to help you decide where you will live and raise your children?
We firmly believe that Mr. Silverfarb must have "slept through" many a journalism class to come up with a column as ridiculous as this one. We are avid readers of the Daily Journal but have decided there are many other papers we can read in its place. Perhaps it would be beneficial if you "think" before "hiring."
