I heartily applaud Michelle Durand's column ( "Marriage rights versus marriage rites" in the March 10 edition of the Daily Journal) in support of same-sex marriages. My husband and I are baffled at why warm, loving couples who have been together far longer than we, even those who have children (unlike us), are denied the same legal rights and given a pass on the same legal responsibilities that we have.
My role model couple is gay. If it hadn't been for their good example of a warm, loving, and equitable relationship, I don't think I would have been willing to get married. They helped promote a healthy marriage - ours.
Maybe marriage equality threatens traditional gender roles, but it certainly does not threaten marriage.
