On November 10, BFI participated in a Performance Hearing as part of our contractual obligation with the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA).
During the four-year agreement, BFI increased commercial recycling by 43 percent (12.6 percent in 2000 to 18 percent in 2004; 18 / 12.6 = 5.4 / 12.6 = 42.9 percent). During this same period, residential recycling increased 12 percent (42.3 percent in 2000 to 47.3 percent in 2004). BFI acknowledges that we missed the contractually obligated diversion goal two out of the four years. However, this was only one component out of a total of 12 by which BFI's performance is being measured. BFI met 11 out of the 12 requirements, which is an overwhelmingly passing score.
BFI does not own the South San Francisco Scavenger Company.
