Editor,

An exciting thing happened on the way to the San Mateo County Supervisor elections — an icon decided to step in. Jackie Speier has been fighting for us and doing the right thing for decades. Where so much of politics seems to be performative these days, Jackie actually gets things done. Now she wants to help steer San Mateo County in one of the most promising, yet challenging, periods in our county’s history. Is there other political talent in the county? Sure there is, and there will always be. But look at how San Francisco is collapsing under ineffective supervisorial governance — do we want our downtowns to become like Union Square? No thanks.
