On the topic of our overheating planet, we have some good news. From the website Beyond Nuclear, I read that Germany has produced too much renewable energy recently. They actually had to consider paying people to not produce energy. What? If that’s the case on any prolonged basis then our problems appear to be solved as far as keeping fossil fuels from our lives. Are we saved? Well not quite.
Paul Hawkens in his book “Drawdown,” shows us the path to actually lowering the concentrations of what’s in our atmosphere to a livable level. The solution is more trees, and possibly some planetary engineering to lower ocean acidity and the concentration of other pollutants.
While renewable energy may compel the market to put most oil wells out of business, we don’t yet have a market to encourage reducing what’s already floating out there. The other nut to be cracked is the ending of subsidies to the coal, oil and gas industries.
