What a shame to let this pool disappear. Was it a lack of attention to the condition of and investment in the maintenance of the pool that got us here, or was the planned “life” of this asset run out and expired? What does the reserve study indicate and what funds have been put aside annually?
We now find ourselves at a crossroads. While it might take decades to realize the return on investment to renovate the pool, generations of kids, as well as adults, will reap the benefits of having this public resource available. As we experience increasing summertime temperatures, the pool will serve as a calming element in District 4, as well as a neighborhood meeting place and family gathering spot. This emphasis on family is what makes San Mateo great.
There are many paths to go on to solve this urban planning question. If District 4 votes to overhaul this center with a district tax, its residents perhaps could get free access while others would pay a use fee. I’m confident we will come up with a workable solution. I like the idea of corporate sponsorship, partnering with the community and maybe even getting their name on the building.
Make it a win-win for San Mateo.

On the swimming pool, if you want to take action now please email San Mateo City Council, and ask them to prioritize funding to fix the Joinville pool during 2025 Blue Sky sessions. This meeting determines what we budget and prioritize in the year ahead.

Appreciate the community coming up with creative solutions.
Exactly. No reason to fund $500k to the Mayor's pet project - historical resources updating -- when the needs of the residents of TODAY are suffering from lack of services and opportunities.
