Editor,
In his Nov. 13 column, John Horgan celebrates the “return of proper grammar” after the recent election of Republicans who deride and persecute transgender and gender-nonconforming people.
This very vulnerable population deserves that we treat them consistently with their truth and identity. Horgan comments that it is “inconvenient” to have to use non-gendered pronouns occasionally. In fact, if you think before you speak, it is not hard to use “they” and “them” pronouns when asked by someone for whom this means so much. How would Horgan feel if others refused to call him by his actual name or misgendered him?
The argument that we should return to “traditional” grammar rules is faulty. Language and grammar have always evolved. Otherwise, we would be speaking Chaucer’s middle English. As George Bernard Shaw said, “[A]ll evolution in thought and conduct must at first appear as heresy and misconduct.” It’s a small gesture to adapt our language to respect and treat others as we would like to be treated. If Horgan finds this gesture confusing, I’m happy to practice speaking with him in the language of this century.

While I have no interest in offending someone, I also will not have my language policed and affirm someone's delusion. Everyone has a sex, which cannot be changed and is not plural."Gender" is meaningless.
Using wrong-sex pronouns is also a type of "gateway drug"- if I refer to male swimmer Lia Thomas as "she", it signals that I accept him as female, which I do not.
As far as the "very vulnerable" population, currently the most vulnerable population is women, who are told to "be kind" and accept men into our sports, bathrooms, locker rooms, private spaces, shelters and even prisons. Currently in California there are dozens of violent male felons in women's prisons, and many women have been raped and impregnated by these men who "identify as women".
Fortunately radical gender ideology seems to be on the way out. The majority of the country does not support men identifying into women's spaces and even Democrats are speaking out on this issue following their election loss.
Hello, MichKosk
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) spoke on the issue of biological males participating in sports against girls and women. There were, of course, calls for him to resign. Rep. Moulton reported that the overwhelming majority of comments he received supported his point of view. That doesn't mean we should dismiss folks who disagree with the congressman... but it does bring the issue into focus.
Yes, he was one I was thinking of, there are others. Also a NYT editorial today that Democrats need to start using common sense on gender issues (men in women's sports/spaces and also the travesty of what we are doing to children in the name of gender ideology.) The Atlantic also ran a similar piece.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Clowes. However, I can’t help but notice that you’re using “traditional” grammar to convey your argument. Because of that, most everyone else can understand your argument and point of view. However, I’d disagree with your conclusion. If you consider it a small gesture to adapt our language to respect and treat others then let’s start including, “Your highness” or “Your majesty” or any other small gesture people would like to be recognized as. As for Mr. Horgan feeling if others refused to call him by his name, wouldn’t he just ignore them, since he doesn’t know they’re calling him? If they misgendered Mr. Horgan, I get the feeling (and I could be wrong) Mr. Horgan would just have a chuckle and go on about his day. I know I would.
Allow me to try and speak one of the languages of this century (this will be a big fail, IMO)… ICYMI and AFAIK, RN some may think your letter TL;DR and would prefer “traditional” grammar IRL. LOL. TTYL. BTW, FWIW I read somewhere that LOL means laugh out loud while LoL means laughing but not as loud. Clearer than traditional grammar? Let’s keep our “traditional” grammar so folks can communicate their ideas, beliefs, etc. to the broadest audience.
Come on Terence, every adult knows LoL or LOL means “Little Old Lady” 👵
Thanks for setting me straight, Mr. Harris. I’ve been inadvertently insulting people all this time? No wonder they’re not returning my texts. I thought it was because I’m a Trump supporter. Instead, it’s because I missed the memo. Yeah, let me go with that.
