Editor,

In her letter, “Bold new candidate suggestion” (Thursday, July 18), Susan Brown of San Carlos referred to the replacement of President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket as “a matter of urgency that could save us from Donald Trump.”

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Dawid. Remember a few weeks ago, you predicted Biden would announce he wouldn’t see re-election and he would endorse Harris? Now if Biden resigns from the presidency, you would win the trifecta and I’d ask you which numbers I should play in the various California lotteries. The bigger question is whether you’ll vote for the “anointed” candidate or a write-in a candidate or better yet, vote for Trump because Democrat policies, no matter who is in charge won’t change for the better with any Dem candidate. Looking forward to what you’ll see next in your tea leaves. Keep those LTE’s coming.

Thanks, Terence. Total LOL at the trifecta possibility.

Sadly, that won't happen.

Believe me, though, I've thought about it.

What really strikes me is how Speaker Johnson and I are on the same page, though for different reasons. I take it you've read, "Speaker Johnson calls on Biden to resign after the president announces he won’t seek reelection" https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/21/politics/mike-johnson-gop-calls-biden-resign/index.html

Hey Irvin D. – Johnson’s announcement, along with JD Vance and a host of others echoing the same is what reminded me of your LTE. So you don’t think Biden will resign? We’ve got a few months remaining and some are bringing up the 25th Amendment. Don’t you think Biden would resign before being forced out? If so, trifecta. That’s assuming Biden is still with us – there has been no proof of life for a number of days.

Superfecta pick? Since Biden is basically a non-factor, any prognostications on whether Harris will make it on every ballot, whether via overcoming lawsuits challenging her ability to be placed on ballots, or being replaced by someone else the DNC believes will provide more competition against Trump? Or if Harris can make it to the finish line, another prediction (is there any wager greater than a superfecta?) - do you think the DNC would allow Harris to debate Trump?

Irvin D.

Na, can't or won't happen as the 25th Amendment requires the cabinet and VP to oust the president. They all revere Biden. What does he have left, 6 months?

But I do agree with your speculation about Biden's health. Isn't he supposed to return to the office today?

As for Harris being on the ballot in all 50 states, I was surprised by Johnson's legal threat. I see it as being empty, so I'm looking forward to the RNC filing suits.

As for the debate, that will be one to watch, should it happen. I strongly believe that voters all entitled to it!

I must say that I'm delighted by this turn of events. This will be such a 'better' election than what we are expecting prior to Biden's announcement Sunday morning. Going back to my first two LTEs on the referendum vs. choice election issue, Harris has the potential to really do a 180 here in the sense that heretofore, it was a referendum on Joe Biden. Now it's either a referendum on the Biden-Harris administration, or a referendum on Trump. Frankly, I'm not really sure!! In any case, the Dems are in a much, much better place. They got their act together!!
