Coyotes are essential to our ecosystem — as they primarily dine on rodents and insects.
So rather than fear the wild canines or attempt to remove them from the region — we must learn to coexist with them.
DiNapoli’s article was very educational, and it can’t be stressed enough for dog walkers to keep their pups on leashes and be aware when in areas where coyotes are known to inhabit. Cat owners, please keep your kitties indoors. And, of course, never feed the coyotes. And that goes for all wildlife. I have encountered coyotes on a handful of occasions while walking and biking. I maintained a safe distance and found them to be quite entertaining, rather goofy, curious and not the least bit aggressive.
We are fortunate to have such mystical creatures in our backyard, so stay alert, employ common sense and practice safety in order to keep the peace for everybody.
