I want to thank Supervisor David Canepa for his thoughtful piece this week regarding suicide rates among young men in the county. Canepa writes that firearms are used in a significant amount of these deaths.
That is why our small citizens group, Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback, has partnered with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Board of Supervisors in conducting nine gun buybacks in the county dating back to 2018, resulting in over 3,400 firearms turned in.
The future of these buybacks is now in jeopardy as funding for these events has become an issue. However, we remain hopeful that the county can find a way to once again sponsor these critical events.
Our only goal is to make our communities safer. If just one life can be saved through a gun buyback, isn’t it worth the effort?
Actually, Mr. Comolli, there is no definitive evidence gun buybacks are effective, so no, tis better to use the funding for programs to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. To wit, criminals.
