Editor,
Last weekend, during record-breaking heat, hundreds of people from the North Central neighborhood of San Mateo used King Park as a refuge. Families relaxed on the grass, sought shade under the trees and enjoyed the open, green space.
Just a few days later, the City Council voted to replace most of King Park’s grass with artificial turf. It’s bad enough that King Pool is open only a handful of days during the summer, depriving the community of a valuable recreational option. Must the council also take away the cool grass as well?
The council made this decision without seeking input from those who live closest to this park, and in the face of community objections. The fact is, King Park is an island of green in a neighborhood that has a real shortage of such spaces.
Replacing the grass would increase the summer temperatures. It would expose children who play sports on that turf to the irritating and possibly carcinogenic effects of artificial turf exposure. And it would convert a large open green field from a multi-purpose neighborhood space to a single-use sports field used primarily by American Youth Soccer Organization and other groups from outside the neighborhood.
If the city must rip out living lawns and replace them with plastic, there are many better locations. Don’t kill the grass in a place where it is loved and treasured by those who live by it.

Add...that cigarette burns create a hardened spot of plastic that cuts and/or scrapes severely
Most turf still use anti-flame retardants that have been banned from children's clothing and furniture. They will fume during hot, sun baked days for those on the turf to breath it in...and if it does catch on fire...noxious fumes till it self extinguished....4th of July anyone...
Organic's (poop, urine, etc) do NOT biodegrade in turf...
Here are some links to help folks understand the over all cost of ownership of artificial turf...and to answer the PMs on that...

Typical artificial turf warranty and the upkeep necessary to maintain that warranty....did not know that window's reflective sun light is a problem with artificial turf....that weed do grow in artificial turf...make sure to read about food (Gatoraid) and rotting organic material in/on turf...
