Editor,
Japanese Americans weren’t the only residents of San Mateo to live in segregated housing after World War II (“San Mateo home honors history of Japanese-American families,” May 18 edition).
When I graduated from San Mateo High School in 1961, Japanese American, Chinese American and Black people were confined to an area south of the high school to about Third Avenue, bordered by Delaware Street and Highway 101. The rest of San Mateo was a minority-free zone.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but my Japanese-American classmates were born in the internment camps. Nobody wanted to discuss that shameful chapter of American history that spawned racism that continued after the war. My classmates could only get their hair cut at a few places in town — nobody else wanted their business. When I worked for San Mateo Times in the ’70s, a woman canceled her subscription because her new carrier was Japanese American and her husband fought “those people” during World War II.
All of the landscapers back then were Japanese, but they worked hard, saved their money and sent their children to college. Their children and grandchildren are probably hiring Hispanic people who do that work now.

Executive order # 9066 by FDR, to incarcerate US citizens and residents of Japanese descent during WWII, has to be the most horrible, unnecessary and atrocious violation of US civil rights any US president has ever issued!
"most horrible?" Stand in line behind slavery, the removal of tribes and - surprise - the draft, which amounts to selective servitude.
Will, I was thinking the same thing
Wow! Pigs must be flying? Jorg is putting aside his ‘orange man bad’ rants to direct a ‘rose man bad’ outrage at a Democrat President? Now if only Jorg would stop willfully ignoring treasonous Biden so we can see Jorg has decided to join us in the here and now.
Jorg,
Although I agree that the incarceration of the Japanese was a terrible black eye for America, we ain't seen nothing yet if the dictator wannabe, Trump, gets elected. There won't be any violation of civil rights because there won't be any civil rights to violate.
Taffy - are you kidding or out of your mind? What makes you think that Trump would exercise dictatorial powers? First of all, that would be impossible because of our federal government structure, but second of all why would he want to be following in Biden's footsteps? Have you noticed his Democrat allies trying to prevent Trump from being being on their ballots, the Soros' backed DA's dragging Trump into courts on specious charges, the weaponization of the DOJ that appears to tolerate or even endorse a dual legal system, and the total denial that is allowing millions of unvetted migrants to cross our border and is somehow not an national security issue? What in your mind constitutes dictatorial power? Trump will not be a dictator but he will set things straight again, just like it was prior to that stiff Biden and his gang. But, you may not enjoy law and order, so keep on supporting that loser Biden while you lock up your house and go broke at the pump and the super market.
Dirk,
I won't bore the readers with Terence's usual reverse the names and cut and paste the same comment, but what makes you think Trump wouldn't be a dictator? He said he wants to be on the first day and if you think when he says "only for a day" he means it you must have gotten a bag of bad goods. When he says something and walks it back the first thing he said is true and what he means. He admits that retribution is his goal for those that opposed him by weaponizing the DOJ for his personal vendetta. I agree the unvetted migrant issue is a problem but when both sides had worked on a bipartisan bill back in Jan-Feb Trump opposed it because he was more concerned with having something to talk about on campaigns than actually caring about fixing the border problem and convinced the Republican eunuchs in Congress to oppose the bill.
Laffy Taffy with the usual Chicken Little irrationality - is it cloudy with a chance of meatballs?
Hey LittleFoot, you may already know this… There is, in our reality, a candy brand named Laffy Taffy, with an assortment of flavors. Fortunately for us, the Laffy Taffy you refer to here doesn't have a candy brand. If we joined Taffy in his world, I can imagine a few of his big sellers for the left… Sore Loser Lime (tastes bitter); Nothingburger Nectarine (tastes bitter); Rabid Democrat Durian (tastes bitter); Hypocrite Hackberry (tastes bitter); Republican to Democrat Switcheroo Star Fruit (you guessed it, tastes bitter), to name a few that reflect Taffy’s responses. Hey Taffy, you can use those names royalty-free. Unlike Dem's I wouldn't tie you up in lawfare for their use.
Terence,
Sorry, but your flavor profile is a bit off. All of my flavors you mentioned (some very creative) are sweet but if Trump says they are bitter the gullible will believe him. Here's a deal for you. I am willing to eat crow in November if things go bad, how about you? I will have my crow with a creamy marsala sauce and side of mushroom risotto . How will you fix yours?
Taffy, I get the feeling you’re a master at preparing crow, especially since, based on your comments, you’re likely eating crow most, if not all the time. So thanks for the offer, but the only crow I’d be eating is if you invite me over and serve it up. Don’t forget the garlic bread. BTW, you may not agree with the ‘bitter’ flavor profile but I know you’d agree they’re definitely sour.
I'd say the anti-semitism that is occurring in the United States is far worse considering how far I thought the United States and the world had come with respect to the hatred for the Jewish people.
Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, the democrat party, CNN, anti-semite school presidents have all turned their backs on innocent Jewish people and students. They provide little help and actually stoke the fires of hate and allow violent protests to continue. Joe thinks a few statements made against the protests shows he's appalled, but his actions show he's an anti-semite.
What occurred 80 years to Japanese citizens was bad and an overreaction, but it was brought on by Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. Even so, it was nothing compared to 6 MILLION Jews being slaughtered, burned alive and exterminated. The US did their best to stay neutral and ignore the holocaust, but was forced to enter the war once we were attacked by Japan and Germany declared war against the US.
It appears the hate for Jews is back and in full force in the US and the World. I guess Bible prophecy is right again.
And how ironic that a German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is now asking for the arrest of a Jewish man, Benjamin Netanyahu
