Five stories, seven stories, nine stories, more. The prospect of having 30-story buildings rise up among us is on the table. And who is behind these plans? The development corporation that’s headquartered in Orange County or the rich guys who left our state for income tax friendly Texas or a foreign oligarch? They look back at California real estate as their cash cow. They all want more.
But who decides how high the stories go? Is it the City Council? No. Is it the state legislature where some campaigns are financed by developers? Ever see a 30-story building from right underneath it? You might injure your neck. Step back a quarter mile and look at it from the long shadow it casts. It’s huge, larger than any structure on the Peninsula. Take a drive past the Lake Merced Apartments at the south side of The City. They are big, but “only” 14 stories tall.
As local real estate is Wienerized into tiny lots that create more congestion and giant apartment structures designed to maximize profits, we need to be sure that such development is in our best interest and not just those who chase a profit.
The solution is to convert the HRS into high speed transit to outlying lying areas where far less expensive housing can be built. Liberals oppose this which is why the Peninsula will look like Manhattan someday.
