I want to thank Karen Keefer, a fellow Redwood City resident who has extensive FEMA experience, for illustrating the important public safety concerns of building out on the Redwood City salt ponds. I can see why Cargill, and other real estate industry folks, don’t like to talk about the issue. While they try to downplay legitimate concerns, their spokespeople even admit that corporate users often ask about the risks of sea-level rise and liquefaction near the site. If companies are worried about being located out on bayfill, should we should be too?
"The two issues of greatest concern to me are the threat posed by a major earthquake, and the fact that placing any housing on this sea-level floodplain will require a massive new levee to hold back the rising Bay waters. The safety of families and schoolchildren that Cargill proposes to place there should be the primary issue and concern.” Karen Keefer
The USGS maps don’t lie — these salt ponds are not a safe place to put people, schools and homes.
