David Canepa head shot

David Canepa

Whether you are an orphan, a prisoner, sick, a refugee, homeless or mentally ill, the Daughters of Charity for nearly 400 years provided charitable health care for the most vulnerable among us. They’ve been the heroes of the poor for centuries all around the world.

Locally, the Daughters of Charity established Mary’s Help Hospital in 1893 which ultimately transformed in 1965 into what is now called Seton Medical Center in Daly City. Today, Seton’s emergency department serves about 28,000 patients annually, with the overwhelming number of them, 84 percent, having Medicaid or Medi-Cal as their insurance.

Sorry Mr. Canepa. Daughters of Charity have sold their hospitals years ago and no longer are involved. As the first district elected supervisor, please don't ever come to the conclusion that the county should buy this hospital in your district. We don't want to. I know it is coming as I have written for months about this issue and I am just waiting for you to try to propose that to the other county supervisors. I hope the hospital can get up on its feet in the private sector, but don't try to push this on the country residents. We don't want to own and operate any more hospitals that lose a lot of money. We will have our eyes on you.

Supervisor David Canepa leaves out some important history about Seton funding and staffing the YES on Measure A campaign back in 2012. The 1/2 cent sales tax estimated to produce $60M per year and last for 10 years. It produced over $80M. That was the measure the Grand Jury reported on stating the County Leaders lied to the voters about a deficit that didn't exist. https://www.sanmateocourt.org/documents/grand_jury/2012/structural_deficit.pdf
