Even as some states and localities are “reopening” businesses and public spaces, it is likely that the COVID-19 pandemic will still be with us in November when Americans will elect a president, the entire membership of the U.S. House and more than a third of the U.S. Senate.

It is past time for Congress to require states to expand opportunities for voting by mail and early voting — and to help pay for those changes — so that Americans on Nov. 3 aren’t faced with a choice between protecting their health and exercising the most important right of citizens in a democracy.

An excellent editorial with at least 7 good points. That means there is at least 7 reasons for Moscow Mitch McConnell and the 51 other spineless senators to oppose it and obstruct its implementation.

Look at how well San Mateo has done with all mail in voting. We don’t see final results as thousands of votes are not tabulated for weeks. When we had live precinct voting, votes were tabulated instantly and visual verification (a polling place volunteer saw you) is made. When “mail-in” becomes the norm, it will be important to minimize fraud potential by not allowing “ballot harvesting” or collection except by election officials. It will also mean more funding for election offices for faster tabulation on Election Day(s).

Hello Mike,

I may have missed something when I read your comment. Are you saying you are for mail-in balloting or against it? You mention the Republican buzz word "ballot harvesting" and also say that it would mean more funding for the election offices. The paranoid President seems to think it will mean thousands and thousands of fraudulent votes even though the only real cases of major fraud were by the Republicans in North Carolina with Mark Harris, I hope not a relative.

I favor mail-in because in the bay area or California in general many people work hours from where they live making it impractical to vote in person and it makes it easier for disabled, elderly etc.
