What exactly is letter writer James Cresta’s message (in the Oct. 24 edition of the Daily Journal)? Friends of his died in Vietnam “so all Americans can have rights.” But don’t you dare utilize those rights by refusing to stand and say the pledge of allegiance.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1943 that no one can be compelled to say the pledge and lower courts have ruled that students cannot be compelled to stand when the pledge is recited. As for the “abundant free social services” some of his students enjoy, Cresta should compare our rather paltry government provided services with those offered by many European countries.
You are right Alfred, nobody should be forced to participate in the pledge of allegiance. However, it is our right to be disgusted by those people and boycott them anytime we wish. Go ahead and take a knee, it is your right, just remember you will be upsetting a majority of your fellow countrymen who will want nothing more to do with you. Your choice.
