I just received the official voter guide for the California general election, Nov. 6. It’s one of the best things the state provides. Of course many, if not most, won’t read it, but it has a wealth of information on the propositions and bonds as well a statements provided by statewide candidates for office. I always look at who is supporting/opposing a measure to find out what and who is behind it. And some of this can be very entertaining.
Proposition 10 which expands local governments authority to enact rent control on residential property has already been the subject of a media blitz, paid for primarily by landlords including Essex. Proposition 10 would repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act of 1995, which banned local rent control for buildings constructed after 1995.
Proposition 10 would allow price caps on units when a tenant moves out, known as vacancy control. The initiative would not impose rent control itself — instead, it would allow cities and their voters to do so. If you look at who is signing the argument against, it is, among others, longtime California lobbyist Alice Huffman who for many years headed the California Teachers Association. She is now president of the California NAACP and it would seem that group would be in favor of lower rents. She has been accused of using or confusing the NAACP’s interests with those of her own political consulting firm which receives large fees for working on these campaigns.
Huffman maintains stricter forms of rent control would discourage housing construction and hurt low-income tenants. Meanwhile, Eric Heins, current president of the California Teachers Association signed the argument in favor of Proposition 10. It’s well known how high rents are impacting teachers, their schools and the children they teach. Teachers move to other districts where they can afford housing leaving a big gap in school districts such as ours.

Also of note are dueling state legislators on Proposition 7 which would make daylight saving time year-round. Supporting the measure are Assemblyman Kansen Chu, D-San Jose, and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, D-San Diego. But opposing it are state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, and Assemblyman Philip Chen, R-Brea. This is a proposition we can decide for ourselves because we actually experience it. I am voting yes. I hate it when it gets dark at 5 p.m. But others hate it when it’s still dark at 7 a.m.

Proposition 6 is especially bad news for people who drive ( anywhere) or take transit. We already pay more for new tires because of the potholes in our roads and highways. We aren’t going to reduce traffic unless we have better transit. This was put on the ballot to increase turnout by the anti-crowd and supporters of Republican candidate for governor, John Cox, and by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, to help endangered Republicans running for Congress. If it passes, this ballot measure is not going to help the candidates but it will hurt each and everyone of us as we try to move from place to place.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh has just been appointed as the new member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Republicans had enough votes to put him on the bench because the limited FBI investigation did not prove he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl when both were in high school or reveal that he might have done this while intoxicated. I was glued to the TV last Thursday. It was similar to Watergate, the Clarence Thomas hearings and the O.J. Simpson trial. Riveting. Historic. But if you were a woman, draining. And now that he has been appointed the majority of Americans will be horrified if not disappointed. He would fill the seat of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy but Kavanaugh is expected to be more like another sitting justice, the most conservative member of the court, Clarence Thomas, who was also accused of sexual harassment (in the workplace) but confirmed nonetheless. This is a wake-up call to renew focus and energies on the mid-terms and hope November brings needed changes to our federal government. You might send a thank you donation to U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota) who voted her conscience, not politics.

Interesting news out of Foster City where two highly respected former councilmembers, Pam Frisella and Steve Okamoto, have removed their endorsement of candidate Richa Awasthi because of her association with current controversial Councilman Herb Perez.

California is in a housing crisis. Rents are d*mn high. How do we deal with this crisis?
It's clear that Prop 10 is NOT the solution. Let's consider an alternative: pass a state law, either through legislature or through referendum, that ABOLISHES rent control.
Abolishing rent control will add supply. 37 states prohibit rent control; 9 states allow rent control but have not implemented it; only CA, NY, NJ, MD and DC actually implement rent control. In 1994, Massachusetts prohibited rent control through referendum. Result? Massive increase in rental housing.
The shenanigans in Foster City are nothing but the character assassination of yet another woman in politics. Old school Foster City does not want to see an immigrant mother elected whom they can not control and manipulate. Richa is her own woman and what is being "whispered" about her on closed Facebook groups and in smoke filled rooms in Farragut Park is the lowest of the low politics. Trumpian and divisive.
So you think Heitkamp voted her conscience and not politics? Hopefully, Democrats can reflect upon their new tactic of pushing guilt with no evidence. This time, it happened to a Republican-nominated Supreme Court Justice. Inevitably, it will happen between competing Democrats, whether at the local, state or federal level and hopefully, they can then endure the same experience as Justice Kavanaugh.
Thank goodness we have a majority of senators who believe in the presumption of innocence. I’d recommend a donation to any of them. Sending any donations to Heitkamp, as with Crooked Hillary, is a waste of money – but by all means, please do, as she may need funds when she loses her re-election campaign.
As for Prop 10, vote NO, as this proposition wouldn't address more housing and unintended consequences will result in the removal of existing rental housing. Prop 6 should be a YES, otherwise the greedy state legislators will continue to increase fuel taxes or fees without voter approval. As for daylight savings time, who cares, as the amount of daylight doesn't change. Or is this a sneaky way to create an appointed CA Horology Department position.
What a great weekend it was when judge Kavanaugh was sworn into the supreme court. The process showed the low character of our two senators and all those lefties that convicted this man just based on one allegation 36 years ago all with no facts. It was obvious to me and others that this woman was lying and not credible. This is a vindication of every man who has been falsely accused of sexual abuse and I hope that people will begin “I believe him” when men have false allegations charged to them. This debacle will energize the right and get their voters out in numbers you have not seen. What a great day for America and the Trump agenda. To all those who said he would not be confirmed, guess you were wrong again. God bless our president and our new supreme court justice Brett Kavanaugh.
