Patricia Lorraine Fontaine, born June 21, 1924, died Oct. 23, 2017.
Known as Pat to those closest to her, was born in Minneapolis and grew up in Portland, where she was known to her childhood friends as Paddy Ryan. While Pat was a nurse, she was introduced to Dan Fontaine, who was serving in the Navy during World War II. They met, fell in love, married, settled in South San Francisco and easily resembled the couple in the iconic photo of the sailor and nurse kissing when the war ended. After 42 years of marriage, Dan predeceased Pat in May of 1990.
Pat is survived by her five children, their spouses, 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and generations of nephews, nieces and dear friends.
Pat is a 1944 graduate of Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. She enjoyed being outdoors and tending to her roses, she loved a good laugh, had impeccable cursive handwriting and always wore green on St. Patrick’s Day. A private interment has been held at Golden Gate National Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to The Marianist at marianist.com. Arrangements by Garden Chapel (650) 583-2510.
