Kartar Dhillon, 1915-2008, writer and political activist, born to Indian immigrants, is the last of eight children. Her parents were founding members of the Gadar Party to free India from British rule.
She worked, raising children, picking crops, as a waitress and secretary for SF Community Music School, Teamsters and Asbestos Worker’s; 30 year member of OPEU, Local 3. In World War II, she was a machinist and truck driver for the Marine Corps. She retired in 1983 to devote time to her writing.
She was active in the Gadar Party; supported Black Panthers’ work, farm workers organizing and Korean reunification movement. She got ILWU to assist striking Pakistani merchant marines at the San Francisco wharf.
In 1989, she published "Parrot’s Beak” in "Making Waves: An Anthology of Writings By and About Asian American Women.” She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Punjabi American Heritage Society and is included in "Distinguished Asian Americans: A Biographical Dictionary.”
She will be remembered for her compassion, strength and insuppressible spirit by her children: Ayesha Gill; Dildar Gill Pisani and husband, Bob; Pritam Gill (deceased); her nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
There is a memorial celebration of her life 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley at 1 Lawson Road, Kensington.
