On July 28, 2024 Joanne passed on to heaven after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers. After graduation from Sequoia High School in 1960, she went to work as a secretary for the Redwood City School District. It was there that she met Jean Waterhouse, Barry’s cousin, who introduced her to her future husband. Barry and Joanne were married for 58 years. After 20 years she retired from the school district and went on to further her education. She received a BA degree in Human Relations from Golden Gate University, and an MS degree in Counseling from San Francisco State University. She was Board Certified as a Counselor and went on to work as a career counselor at the Career Education Center in San Mateo, and then at Cal State University, East Bay. During her life she enjoyed extensive travel, sailing, and powerboating. She was a member of the Encinal Yacht Club, the San Joaquin Yacht Club, and the Civic Garden Club of San Carlos. Her favorite travel destination was Hawaii which she and Barry visited over 30 times. In 2010, she and Barry moved into their dream home in San Carlos. Joanne is survived by her husband Barry of San Carlos, and her sister Sally Jean Burns of San Jose.
Services are at Crippen and Flynn Carlmont Chapel in Belmont on Tuesday, August 13, followed by entombment at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto. Contributions can be made to the Alzheimers Association.
