George Robert Welling
Resident of San Mateo
June 20, 1945 – August 30, 2017
George Robert Welling passed away on Wednesday August 30, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. George touched many lives and will not soon be forgotten. He was born in South Dakota and resided in California since he was a toddler.
He enlisted in the US Marines in 1963 and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam where he received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star among his many awards. George served as a San Mateo Police Officer for almost 30 years retiring as a Detective Sergeant. Never one to rest, he then provided executive protection for many colorful dignitaries and most recently worked with SIS providing security for Apple, Inc.
George completed over 100 marathons in cities across the US and loved traveling the globe.
He is survived by son Kent Welling of San Mateo, and granddaughter Alexandria Welling of Washington state; by sister Dorothy (Dottie) Woodworth of Roseville, and her two daughters Shawna Mengel (David) & Tamara Smith (Raymond). He is also survived by long-time partner Patricia Ciampi and her two children Angela Barton & Theodore Conde (Wendy), and three grandchildren Hailey, Abigail & Elias.
Friends are invited to a memorial service at St. Gregory’s Church, 28th & Hacienda Ave. in San Mateo at 1:30pm on Friday, September 22nd, with a celebration of life to follow at the Elks Lodge, 229 W. 20th Ave. in San Mateo.
Memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, the SPCA, or to the CPMC Foundation.
