It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eleanor (Babe) Catherine Herndon, 87, of Sun City West, AZ with her family by her side on August 20, 2025.
Babe was born on September 5, 1938, in Oakland, CA to John and Eleanor Altieri. Babe grew up and lived in San Mateo, CA. Babe graduated from San Mateo High School in 1956. She also attended Canada College where she earned her Microcomputer Technician Certificate.
On September 6, 1958, she married the love of her life Charles (Chuck) Herndon, where their journey of love and companionship lasted 67 years. Babe worked at Wardrobe Cleaners, Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Accounting Dept, Wells Fargo Bank, Colors by Herndon, owned and operated with her husband, making jockey silks for Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields, and Office Manager at the San Mateo Elks Lodge, where she computerized their manual system with the help of dedicated Elks members.
In 1996, Babe and Chuck made their home in Clearlake, CA where they would spend many cherished summers with family and friends. In 2005, they moved to Sun City West, AZ.
Babe was passionate about her cooking, delighting everyone with her array of culinary styles of food, Italian being her favorite. Babe and Chuck even printed their own cookbook to share her wonderful recipes with her family and friends. Babe enjoyed working with many crafts including Tole painting, basketry, beading and sewing. She was well known for her story telling, her uplifting laughter, and her unique sense of humor.
She is survived by her husband Chuck Herndon and sons Daniel Herndon (Jennifer) and Jeffrey Herndon (Jenna). Loving grandmother to seven grandchildren, Clasina, Zachary, Ethan, Megan, Vincent, Vin and Arthur. Cherished sister to four siblings: John Altieri (Jody), Sherrill Points (Glenn), Lucy Altieri and Laura Herren. Also, many nieces and nephews.
Eleanor’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on September 27, 2025. A private graveside service will be held at Golden Gate National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to your local PBS Channel. Babe’s life was a blessing to all that knew her, loved beyond words and will be in our hearts forever.
