The lives of many people and animals have been diminished by the Grace-filled passing of their beloved friend and veterinarian, Dr. Max on July 10. Born in Kansas, he carried its strong values of honesty, loyalty, generosity, and deep abiding love into all aspects of his long life. He graduated from Kansas State University with honors, and served in WWII as a Captain in the US Army Veterinary Corps.
Dr. Max Grandfield
He had practices in Wichita, Kansas City and Ardmore, PA before coming to California, where he worked at the San Mateo Animal Hospital for 31 years. He then became the first "house call" doctor in the Mid-Peninsula, through which he developed hundreds of long-lasting friendships with his patients and their owners.
He married his childhood playmate, Nancy in 1945. This year they celebrated 72 years together with their son, Miles, daughter, Julie, and grandchildren Lauren, Evan, Emily and Maddie.
He loved working with his hands, making fine furniture in his attic workshop. His reverence for nature was expressed in his photographs of travels throughout the world. As Volunteer Emeritus, he spent 25 years monitoring Western bluebirds on the Filoli estate grounds. His diverse hobbies included fishing, birding, wine-tasting, and his ever-faithful devotion to the 49-ers.
His courteous, gentlemanly acts, quiet demeanor, humility, decency, sweetness and humor will long be remembered. The world is a better place for his living in it for 94 years.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, San Carlos, July 23, at 2 PM.
