Donald L. Huff

Donald Lloyd Huff (Don) of Burlingame passed away in his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on April 29, 2018.  He was 95.  He proudly considered himself a native San Franciscan, though he was technically born when his mother was visiting family in Berkeley, California.  He grew up in San Francisco with his parents Benjamin and Dolly Huff, and his two sisters, Beverly and Dorothy.  Growing up during the Great Depression, he delivered newspapers in the City, and also helped his father in his radio sales and repair business.  Don graduated from Lowell High School in 1941 and joined the Air Force as an early pioneer of radar during World War II and rose to the rank of corporal.  Don married Bess Evelyn Steinburg of Rapid City, South Dakota on January 19, 1946.   

After the War, Don and Bess moved back to San Francisco where they settled and raised their family.  Don worked as an office supply account manager for 25 years and part-time as a television repairman until he and Bess moved to Burlingame in 1974 to be closer to their daughter and her young family.  Don and Bess were devoted grandparents, attending sporting events and performances, taking family vacations, and being around for anything the family needed.  Don was also a beloved member of the Burlingame community, serving as a crossing guard and yard duty supervisor at Franklin Elementary School for the last 20 years where he loved helping and protecting the children.  The school celebrated his 90^th birthday at an assembly with the entire student body.  School children treated him as a celebrity when they saw him off campus. 

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bess, and his sister Dorothy.  He is survived by his sister, Beverly of San Rafael, his daughter and son-in-law, Doneen and Terry Roberts of Burlingame, son and daughter-in-law Ronald and Darlene Huff of British Columbia, grandchildren Jason and Alisha Roberts, Brian and Andrea Roberts, Darren and Stephanie Roberts, Katie and Ryan McDonald, Benjamin Huff and Faye Basravi, and Emily and Sean Gibbs, and great-grandchildren Katherine and Alexandra Roberts, Tyler and Cody Roberts, and Phoebe, Penny and Archer McDonald.

The family would like to thank the caregivers who helped Don in his past few years in his home. Your impact on Don’s final days and our lives will never be forgotten.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Crosby-N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home located at 2 Park Road Burlingame, CA 94010.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to https://www.gofundme.com/inmemoryofdonhuff to raise funds for his beloved Franklin Elementary School.
