With hearts both heavy and grateful, we announce the passing of Carole J. Ughe, who lived a life full of warmth, kindness, and quiet devotion to her family, friends, and community. Born on October 13, 1937, in Mills Hospital in downtown San Mateo, Carole’s life revolved around the very place she was born and raised.
A San Mateo High School graduate, Carole was a dedicated member of St. Matthews Parish for over 60 years. She married Robert (Bob) Ughe at St. Matthews Church when it was still located downtown (now the Walgreens, much to her amusement), and they shared a long and loving marriage until Bob’s passing in 2012.
Carole and Bob raised their children, Steve and Susan, in San Mateo, sending them to St. Matthew’s Catholic School, where Carole quickly became known as the community “mom.” She served as a classroom mother, scorekeeper, team mom, and a friendly face at the front desk. Her motherly support extended through high school, as she ran the snack shack at Serra High School, cheered on the Padres, and became the unofficial “team mom” for the Notre Dame volleyball team (go Tigers!). Over the years, Carole also dedicated her time to causes close to her heart, including Toys for Tots and other charitable efforts.
Carole is lovingly remembered by her children, Steven and Susan, her daughter-in-law, Anabel, and her grandchildren, Mario and Rose Ughe. She is also survived by her cousins, who were like siblings to her: Bernie Heckenkemper, Sandy Everett (Dan), and Gary Heckenkemper (Kathi), along with her niece and nephews.
Carole was known for her loyalty, kindness, and timeless beauty, both inside and out. She will be fondly remembered as the heart of her village, a person who made everyone feel valued and welcome.
Please join us to honor and celebrate Carole’s remarkable life: Recitation of the holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at the Crosby - N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home, 2 Park Road, Burlingame., and the Funeral Mass at St. Matthew’s Church, San Mateo, at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 7, 2024. Interment and Reception to follow.
For those interested, please consider making a donation in Carole's name at the Samaritan House in San Mateo. This organization continues to support the community that my mom cherished.
