SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is calling on more department chiefs to take pay cuts to help the city tackle a massive budget deficit.
Newsom has asked the city’s top administrators to take a 10 percent pay cut starting in the fiscal year beginning July 1.
But city documents show that just 14 of 58 department heads have complied with Newsom’s request.
The mayor himself has given back nearly 17 percent of his $245,000 annual salary.
Most city department chiefs, as well as rank-and-file employees, have agreed to take a 4.62 percent pay cut in the form of furloughs during the upcoming fiscal year.
But Newsom wants them to give back more of their salaries to help the city close a $483 million deficit.
