ANTIOCH — Antioch police say a toddler who drowned in a swimming pool had wandered away while relatives were changing their clothes after a swim during a family barbecue.
Police Sgt. Diane Aguinaga said Monday that 2-year-old Santino Delao of Concord wasn’t out of anyone’s sight for more than five minutes when the drowning occurred Friday.
Aguinaga says there is no evidence of neglect in the boy’s death and there wasn’t any alcohol at the party. She says his death "appears to just be a tragic accident.”
Police were called around 8:40 p.m. Friday after the child’s body was found in the pool. After officers and medical personnel failed to revive him, the boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
