SACRAMENTO — Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies have stopped handing out gun locks after the nonprofit foundation distributing the locks announced they could fail.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade group based in Connecticut, distributed 400,000 cable locks through more than 300 law enforcement agencies before police in Tennessee reported the problems last week.
More than 5,000 of those locks went to Sacramento County.
"We don't know how many have been handed out, but they are out of them at the Carmichael service center," said Sgt. James Lewis. "I guess they've been pretty popular."
The foundation said Tuesday that no more locks will be given out until extensive testing is done. The cable locks are pulled through gun handles or barrels to prevent the weapon from being fired or loaded.

Locks were handed out in Fresno, Monterey, Moraga, Oakland, Richmond, and South Lake Tahoe. Alameda, San Diego, Sacramento, and Siskiyou counties also distributed the locks.
The lock distribution began about a year ago as a way for gun owners to keep their weapons from children.
The locks passed tests in Sacramento and police said people should continue to use them because they discourage unauthorized use of the gun.
Robert Delfay, president and chief executive of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said a recall decision will be made after the locks are tested.
