SACRAMENTO — Companies could keep shipping kangaroo products into California until 2016 under a bill approved by state senators.
California ended its long-standing ban on shoes and other products made from Australian kangaroos that aren’t endangered and are legally killed in 2007. But the law is set to expire next year unless legislators act to extend it.
Law enforcement officers and soccer players favor kangaroo leather for their footwear.
Sen. Ron Calderon’s SB1345 would allow the imports for another five years. It includes safeguards to make sure threatened populations of kangaroos aren’t harmed.
The Humane Society of the United States opposes the bill by the Monterey Park Democrat.
It passed the Senate Friday on a 23-5 vote and now goes to the Assembly.
