A 56-year old woman jumped from the San Mateo bridge just after noon yesterday and survived.
The Foster City Police Department believes she was committing suicide, although that fact was not yet confirmed. She had no identification on her and her mental condition is being evaluated.
Stanford Hospital is treating her for severe facial injuries, internal injuries, and hypothermia, according to the Foster City and Redwood City Police Departments.
The woman, who is from Lodi, California in the Central Valley, stopped her beige Ford Explorer westbound on the high-rise down to Foster City, and jumped from the bridge 100-150 feet into the water below. Another passenger on the bridge pulled over, just as she leapt from the edge.
Caltrans officials spotted her in the water and called the incident into the police department. The coast guard was called out to respond, but Redwood City police officers reached the woman first by boat, around 30 minutes after her plunge.
She was transported by ambulance to Stanford Hospital.
Capt. Jim Carey of the Foster City Police Department said she most certainly would have died if she had jumped from the peak of the bridge.
He said the San Mateo Bridge gets one or two suicide jumps each year, which is low compared to the Golden Gate Bridge’s 300 yearly average. The San Mateo Bridge does not have a pedestrian walkway, which may be a reason for the low numbers.
