In the first glimpse at a dark financial forecast, the Legislative Analyst’s Office is reporting the next California state budget will likely face a three-year $58 billion deficit, on the magnitude of the impact of Great Recession in 2008.

What that will mean for schools and community colleges will become clearer later this week, when the LAO releases a full analysis of revenue and possible actions Gov. Gavin Newsom could take. As a rule of thumb, TK-12 and community colleges receive about 40% of the general fund through Proposition 98, the formula that determines their allocation. Their portion of the budget gap would be roughly $23 billion, more than double the amount that schools and community colleges have stashed away for fiscal emergencies in the state rainy day fund.

Not So Common

If my income decreases, then my spending decreases. I buy $2 buck chuck, Choice rather than Prime beef, I cut unneeded subscriptions etc... to make ends meet. It is time for school vouchers to control out of control education spending, It is time to cut or freeze salaries for public employees, it's time to cut the freebies the state provides to the irresponsible people, food stamps, after school care, free meals at school, and then require families to pay a minimum of $100 per month per family member for Covered CA healthcare (not $12 a month for a entire family) ... and no this is not fixing things on the backs of poor people because they poor people are not paying their faire share and that's why there's a $58 BILLION shortfall.

If $31B weren’t lost due by Newsom/state incompetence to EDD crime and $B’s weren’t continually wasted on the train-to-nowhere and providing services to people who aren’t legally in CA, we can easily save $58B. And of course, we could save even more, as highlighted by Not So Common, below. Let’s look to cut expenses. Until then, starve the beast and vote no on all measures asking for your hard-earned money. If not, expect more of the same.
