Roasting turkey may be synonymous with Thanksgiving, but for a growing number of Americans, that bird is nowhere on the table. More than 34% of American adults say their least favorite traditional Thanksgiving food is the turkey at the center. Instead, stuffed squash, braised short ribs and even tamales step into the spotlight.

According to a 2025 report, turkey consumption per person has fallen steadily since 2019. While turkey still holds a firm place in many households, a combination of rising costs, smaller gatherings and evolving food preferences has opened the door for a more diverse array of main dishes. Families across the country are rethinking tradition in favor of practicality, taste and personal meaning.
